“The littlest birds sing the prettiest songs” (Jolie Holland does a great version of that song, The Littlest Birds), that’s how I feel about bees (and kids but this is a blog about bee pollen and honey). Aren’t they great? Even if you’re allergic to them (bees, that is...) they’re great as long as they aren’t stinging you. My favorite story to tell my son is the one about when I was little I would come home from school, everyday, make myself the biggest and gooeyist peanut butter and honey sandwich and then I would throw up. Everyday! I love that story because it really shows how dedicated I was to this delicious, honey, goodness. (It’s also amazing how little kids, back then, were really left to take care of themselves. Why am I still making my 12 year old sandwiches after school???)
So naturally, as an adult, I have found a local honey supplier. Last week, I hit the Davis Honey stand at the Rochester Public Market and I noticed they were selling, amongst many other delicious products, bee pollen. What is bee pollen for? They told me it was really healthy and would make me feel great, I was sold! But as you know, I’m not a scientist so I’ll let you decide. WebMD doesn’t have a whole lot of good things to say (haters!) http://www.webmd.com/balance/bee-pollen-benefits-and-side-effects and this next website says all kinds of good things, you’re smart so you decide! http://foodmatters.tv/articles-1/10-amazing-health-benefits-of-bee-pollen. In case you’re going with the second website I’ll share my bee pollen recipe. I also add a little to my smoothies. It has quite a flavor so I just add a little here and a little there.
Right now I feel like I’m getting sick so I’ll give you my Cold Remedy drink recipe. If you don’t have a cold just omit the cayenne pepper.
-1 tsp. or more of lemon juice
-1 tsp. or more of ACV (with the Mother, or course)
-1 tsp. or more of local honey (for this drink I like the orange blossom kind)
-1/2 tsp. or as much as you can handle of cayenne pepper
-1tsp. of bee pollen
-1 cup or more of hot water
Put all the ingredients into the mug. Bring water to a boil and then pour the hot water into the mug. Stir and enjoy!
Remember to live like you're going to need A LOT of help from other people because, in the end, you will!
